The usual way to make meatball sandwiches involves placing cheese on top of the cooked meatballs and closing the bread over them.
It’s a delicious recipe. If you take your cheese more seriously than most people, you can take this recipe to a whole new level by stuffing the cheese inside the meatball.
It makes the sandwich heartier and distributes the cheese goodness more evenly in every bite.
Wrapping bacon around the meatballs adds an explosion of flavour. The crunchiness of the bacon combined with the gooeyness of the cheese is a match made in heaven.
Here is my favourite Bacon Cheese Stuffed Meatball Sandwiches recipe.
What You Need
- 1 pound or 1/2kg ground beef: You can also use a mixture of ground beef and pork.
- 200g mozzarella cheese: For stuffing into the meatballs.
- 12 strips of bacon
- 2 eggs
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 3 garlic cloves
- ½ teaspoon pepper and 1 teaspoon salt
- 350g pasta sauce: You can also make a homemade sauce.
- Fresh parsley
- 1 French baguette
- Olive oil
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
How To Prepare Bacon Cheese Stuffed Meatball Sandwiches
The preparation is straightforward: make the meatballs and put them in the baguette then finish with a generous topping of pasta sauce.
- In a bowl, mix the ground meat, breadcrumbs, two teaspoons finely chopped parsley and three minced garlic cloves. Add salt and pepper for seasoning. Finally, add the two eggs and mix everything thoroughly.
- Mould the mixture into equal sized balls. Make a hole at the centre of each ball and push in a piece of mozzarella cheese. Re-mould the ball to cover the cheese. Wrap each meatball with one or two slices of bacon.
- Place the meatballs evenly on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
- While the meatballs bake, cut the baguette in half and pinch some of the flesh from the inside to make space for the meatballs. Brush the inside of the baguette with some olive oil and place it on a baking sheet.
- With about 5 minutes remaining on the oven timer, place the baguette in the oven under the meatballs. This is to lightly toast the baguette.
- Take the pasta sauce and place it in a pan over medium heat.
- When meatballs are ready, place them in the baguette then spoon the warm pasta sauce over the meatballs.
- Close the sandwich and cut into single-serve sizes.
Tips
When moulding the meatballs, wet your hands first. This will prevent the meat from sticking onto your hands.
